1. Farm-Level Aflatoxin Prevention: Aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus fungi colonise chilli pods during drying when moisture is high and pods contact soil. We require all contracted Kunri farms to dry on elevated platforms or clean concrete surfaces — never directly on soil. Pods are spread in thin layers for maximum airflow. Rain exposure during drying is grounds for rejection of the entire lot. We conduct moisture spot-checks at farm gate before accepting product. Early-stage biocontrol agents (CABI-developed formulations introduced to Kunri farming communities) are encouraged. These measures — not lab testing alone — prevent aflatoxin from forming in the first place.
2. Pesticide MRL Compliance; Farm to: Pakistan's domestic pesticide standards are far more permissive than EU MRLs. Farmers who use common Pakistani insecticides for thrips, aphids, and whiteflies — without knowing EU limits — produce product that passes domestic standards but fails EU border inspection. We work with contracted farms to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and approved biopesticide alternatives. Every commercial lot going to EU, UK, or GCC markets is tested for multi-residue pesticide panel at an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory before shipment. Lots that fail stay out of the export stream.
3. No Synthetic Colour Addition; Sudan Red Absent: Adulteration of chilli powder with Sudan Red and other synthetic dyes is a documented global problem that has triggered major EU recalls and RASFF alerts. Sudan Red is a Group 2B carcinogen — potentially carcinogenic to humans. We test every batch of chilli powder and crushed flake for synthetic dye presence by spectrophotometry. Sudan Red: absent. Confirmed in CoA. Our ASTA colour value is achieved entirely through the natural carotenoid content of the Kunri varieties — capsanthin and capsorubin — not through dye addition.
4. ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratory Testing; Every Batch: EU Regulation 2019/1793 specifies that testing supporting enhanced border controls for high-risk spice origins must come from ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories. Results from non-accredited labs are not accepted at EU border inspection posts. All Harmain Global pre-shipment testing is conducted at accredited laboratories. The CoA we provide with each commercial shipment meets the documentary standard required for EU, FDA, GCC, and GACC border clearance. Lot-specific CoA — not a reference sample from a different batch.
Pakistan made approximately 898 red chilli shipments in 2024, growing 241% year-on-year, to 38 countries. Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and UAE together account for 82% of current shipments — but Europe and North America represent the highest-margin opportunity for premium grade and certified product.
